I simplify my life by simplifying my thinking. Being a freelance photographer is a fantastic job, but the lifestyle can be unpredictable and challenging. Balancing career and a personal life demands planning and flexibility. I find ways to free up my thinking and alleviate the unnecessary stress of everyday so that I can roll with the punches and enjoy life.
1. Make a decision.
Being indecisive wastes time and can make small problems seem large. If you are not sure what to do next, then go with your instincts or your “gut”. You can access and learn from what works or does not work from your choices.
2. Let go of negative feelings.
Emotions are a great teacher. Recognize and listen to your feelings but also let them go if they are negative. Stewing over something negative clouds your judgment and can make your life seem overwhelming.
3. Take small steps.
When a project appears to be too big, break the project down into simpler steps. Create a list of simple tasks to check off. The daunting task is now manageable.
4. Don’t chase technology.
I love technology, but making decisions about what to buy feels like I am running on a treadmill. I wait for the technology to be sold to me. I ask - Do I really need this? How am I going to use this new fun thing?
5. Take care of yourself without judgment.
Eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep. If I do not treat myself well one day, I try to not beat myself up. Instead, I try to do something healthy for myself the next day.
