Your social media presence says a lot about you and your business. If you are snarky and offensive, your following will be of the same type. If you are helpful, positive and give great information, you'll get the same in return. Here are some simple ways to keep up a great online presence:
Don't complain - your business' social media platforms are not the place to whine.
- Instead - be as positive and helpful as possible.
Don't bash others - this goes along the same lines as "Don't complain."
- Instead - use your personal account if you need to vent, but keep it general... for everyone's sake.
Don't just tweet your stuff - No one likes a know-it-all.
- Instead - find interesting tidbits to share from other sources and mix those in with your own thoughts and information.
Don't post at odd hours - It's no good to say something witty when no one's listening.
- Instead - find out when facebook, twitter and emails are most likely to be opened. Read and post then.
Don't be offensive - think "who will this offend?" before you post something. Someone WILL be offended no matter what you post, but if you think about it first, FEWER will be offended.
Don't market your business directly - online peddling is just as bad as door-to-door salespeople
Instead - write a blog post about topics you are an expert about & post those.
Don't include everyone in your long conversation - every little smily face, every little 'OK' tweet/post
Instead - take your conversation offline or to your personal account unless it is useful for others
No one gets all of these perfect all the time but it's helpful to have them in mind when using all forms of social media.
